I've been getting a lot of birds in my yard - especially male and female Cardinals. They are robust, seed-eating birds, with strong bills and typically associated with open woodland. The sexes usually have distinct plumages; the family is named for the red colour (like that of a cardinal's vestments) of males of the type species, the Northern Cardinal.
